March 29th Paint Out
Eight artists participated in the Violett's Lock (C&O Canal) paintout on Sunday, March 29th, 2026. It was a beautiful sunny day, with high clouds, and temperature in the 60's. There was a bit of wind, but the artists were undaunted, each securing her/his spot along the C&O Canal and Potomac River. The participating artists were Allison Berry, Ann Tannous, Vicky Joue, Ray Burns, Ed Reed, Bob Thoren, Lynn Lewis and Andrei Kushnir. Hikers and naturalists stopped by to watch the artists paint, offering many compliments and passersby critiques. One gentleman in a red coat went back onto the towpath so the artist could include a spot of red in her painting. Two fishermen came down in a boat from the previous lock, and portaged the boat into the river.
At noon, the artists assembled at the lock overlooking the river, and held the critique. Mediums represented were oil, watercolor and acrylic. A number of the pieces appeared ready to display (Allison's and Ray's), and Andrei's seemed to attract swarms of mayflies. Photos were taken, and the artists departed, some going to meet friends for lunch.
