Sky Meadows State Park
What a beautiful day it was at Sky Meadows State Park near Paris, VA. The park contains 1,860 acres of woodlands, mountain views and majestic overlooks, grazing cattle, wildlife, creeks, ponds and hiking trails. The Visitors Center includes an historic stone house and accompanying outbuildings. History and beauty are a winning combination at Sky Meadows.
The park is well kept, offering clean bathroom facilities (which can be important to a painter), plenty of parking and drinking water.
Five painters showed up early to paint in oils and watercolors. Everyone painted the lush, late summer landscape, and we all agreed that the overlook of the mountains was spectacular.
The group convened at noon and began a casual critique around 12:30 pm. Part of our discussion centered on the wide variety of greens in the Virginia landscape and how difficult it can be to work with greens while building depth and variety. We shared color ideas.
Present were members Amy Waldrop, Vicki Blum and Catherine Hillis along with guests Laura Bollettino and Katie Flack. Our guests arrived together and painted the majestic overlook. Vicki Blum and Amy Waldrop worked on a pastoral scene and Catherine Hillis created several small watercolors.
