It was a beautiful day in Waterford, VA on Sunday, May 26, 2024, where six artist members and three guest artists painted up and down the village of Waterford, VA, from the Old Mill to High Street. The sky was a vivid blue and the temperature in the mid-80’s, perfect plein air painting weather. There’s been lots of rain in Virginia so the foliage is lush and full.
Several artists painted near Bond Street. Mrs. Ann Belland, a Waterford resident, saw our painters and began driving around town to view the work and asked if she could attend our critique session as well. She was very interested in the painters and their work.
The critique was held under the shade on the porch of the Old School House. There was a wide range of subjects although most of our painters included historic architecture in their paintings. Lynn Mehta was the only artist who painted pastorals. Ms. Mehta and Ms. Miller completed two paintings while our other artists completed one. Mr. Hofstra felt his painting was not ready for viewing.
During our critique, Mrs. Belland explained the history of the buildings our artists and guests painted. It was amazing to hear that some of the buildings dated to the mid-1700’s and that one house was the original post office and another was an African-American Church. It was wonderful having a “local” educate us on the history of the subjects we painted.
