Waterford April Paint Out

Clear blue skies, low humidity and mild temperatures made for a picture perfect day for painting in Waterford, VA. Our group painted flowering trees, historic houses, gorgeous vistas and gardens. Mediums included oil, gouache, water-based oils and traditional oils. We gathered at the Old School in the village for our critique. We were excited to be able to view the paintings of former WSLP member Garnet Jex. Ann Belland of Waterford arranged for 13 of his paintings to be on display for us there. Garnet Jex became a member of the Landscape Club of Washington in 1925. He went on to show work regularly with the club from the late 1920's into the early 1970's.

In attendance were:

Robert Thoren, JoEllen Murphy, Pattee Hipschen, Raymond Burns, Trisha Adams, Jean Schwartz, Lynn Goldstein, with guests: Leann Fink and Amy Waldrop

Meadowlark Mid-week Paint Out, April 12

At Meadowlark Gardens, it was a great day for a paintout with mild spring temperatures. A challenge was the shifting light conditions with overcast clouds one moment and brilliant sun the next. The group had 8 members participating as well as one guest. Trisha posted on Facebook a wonderful group shot. At the lunch review/critique artists shared the focus/intent for the day and how they dealt with constant light and shadow flux (clouds were moving rapidly and light conditions were never stable). Some focused on mass shapes, others 'chased' the erratic sunlight when it appeared, and some artists chose overcast/shadow/flat light. Several artists tried a more finished painting and others chose to sketch single or multiple ideas for later. Lynn (oil) and Christine (watercolor) opted for several small quick 'color relationship' studies.

In attendance: Lynn Mehta, Lida Matheson Stifel, Mimi Hegler, Christine Lashley, Robert Thoren, Pattee Hipschen, Trisha Adams, Jean Schwartz, and guest Theresa Miller

March 27th Annapolis Paint Out

It was an unusually cold and blustering morning in Annapolis, but we had 6 members (Lisa Egeli, David Diaz, Jill Basham, Mary Kokoski, Jean and Harry Jaecks)  and 2 guests (John Eisenman and Theresa Miller) come out to paint. We gathered on the east lawn of the State House for a critique and brief visit, though the cold wind kept us from lingering for a picnic. We all commented on how nice it was to be out painting together after the long pandemic.
