Historic Georgetown Washington, DC February 28, 2010 (Report by Bruce Handford) I arrived about 8:00 am, thinking I was the first to arrive, when I saw Yolanda Frederikse already there and looking for a subject to paint. We both quickly agreed that the 37 degree temperature felt much colder with the windy gusts. This is a traditional location for a February paintout and the members and guests arriving seemed to already have their specific locations in mind for painting. The majority of artists selected positions on the C&O Canal area. The sun seemed to pop in and out but never long enough for anyone to enjoy the warmth for any amount of time. Leonard Justinian chose to paint his watercolor from the bridge looking down on the canal. Guest Hiu Lai Chong also picked a position on the bridge for her oil painting. Jean and Harry Jaecks sketched from the common area of the C&O Canal. Daniel Wise painted an oil painting in the same area as the Jaecks. Also painting in that area was Guest Steve Moen. John Bellinger had a difficult time finding a place to park and consequently parked quite a few streets away from the group. Because of the cold weather John Bellinger suggested having the critique a half hour earlier than usual and members and guests agreed. After the critique I went back to my car for lunch. At that point the sun came out to stay and I decided to do more painting. When I returned I saw guest Hiu Lai Chong standing tall on the bridge painting the new-found light. Guest Steve Moen also continued painting in the common area. When I left at approximately 3:00 pm, Hiu Lai Chong was still painting. Present at the February paintout were members Yolanda Frederikse, Daniel Wise, Leonard Justinian, Jean and Harry Jaecks, John Bellinger and Bruce Handford. There were two guests, Hiu Lai Chong and Steve Moen. ![]() |
