  Sugarloaf Mountain
Dickerson, MD

July 31, 2011
(Report by Hiu Lai Chong and photos by Brenda Will Kidera, Daniel Wise, Hiu Lai Chong)

It has been a hot July, but we had a cool day to paint at Sugarloaf Mountain. It was great to meet some new guest artists and reconnect with old friends. Welcome back Ed Ahlstrom!

Members Mary Kokoski and Mimi Hegler, guest artists Catherine Hills, Jean Schwart and Ann Snyder were inspired by the west view overlooking distant mountains and farmland. What a treat to get to see each artist paint a similar view but in very different styles. It was mind opening to see so many different ways of framing the scene with different composition. Bill Schmidt went to a different overlook and came back with a panorama format of distant mountains with farm houses. Jean Briton-Jaecks and Harry Jaecks decided to paint by the Comus Inn area at the foot of the mountain. Nancy Tankersley and I decided to paint trees and mountain rocks. Ed Ahlstrom took on the challenge of painting another painter - myself painting by the rock. Guest artist Web Bryant's painting depicted the west view overlook brick wall. And lastly, I couldn't find Brenda Will Kidera and wondered where she was, but soon got an answer when she brought her painting in. She was brave enough to paint the other side of the overlook brick wall - right by the cliff (as did Daniel Wise)! She caught the beautiful Surgarlof mountain view. During the critique, Nancy Tankersley presented her painting nicely in the Art Cocoon frame. She also demonstrated to us how this handy system works over lunch. It turned out to be a really fun paint out day!

Members attending were Hiu Lai Chong, Mimi Hegler, Daniel Wise, Jean Brinton-Jaecks and Harry Jaecks, Brenda Will Kidera, Mary Kokoski, Bill Schmidt, and Nancy Tankersley. Guests attending were Ed Ahlstrom, Web Bryant, Catherine Hillis, Jean Schwart, and Ann Snyder.
