ARTIST'S STATEMENT

He favors the use of alkyd paints because of their stability but occasionally finishes up a work with oil paints. His landscape scenes are almost always painted on site. He brings an immense knowledge of painting and conservation technology to the Society.

RESUME

Ross Merrill is not only an accomplished painter, but he also is an expert painting conservator and a painting instructor. Although he was formally trained as a painter, he has worked for several museums in a variety of positions. He has conducted countless painting workshops, and has lectured extensively on various artists and painting techniques. He specializes in plein air painting, portraying the landscape of Maine.

Mr. Merrill has studied at Oberlin, at the Pennsylvania Museum of Fine Arts, and in London. He has done conservatory work for the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D. C. He has won numerous awards at exhibitions throughout the country, and his work has been featured in such prestigious publications as American Artist Magazine and North Light Artist’s Guide. His work is represented in countless private and corporate collections in the United States, Europe and Japan.

He is retired Chief of Conservation Division of the National Gallery of Art. He is represented by the South Street Gallery.
