Howard Cohen
ARTIST'S STATEMENT He uses color rather freely in his paintings, looking intently at his subject matter to find even the most elusive trace of color. His style of painting is reminiscent of the Group of Ten, but with a more contemporary flair. RESUMEHoward Cohen has been an award-winning artist for many years. He graduated from the New England School of Art in 1949 and was awarded a Certificate of Completion in Commercial Art. He has attended courses in landscape painting, Intaglio, watercolor, and color theory at Montgomery College over a span of ten years from 1979 to 1989 and continues to develop as an artist through his attendance at workshops in the Washington area. He studied art at the Maryland School of Art and Design and at Montgomery College from 1950-1980 with Robert Cohen (no relation) and Edwin Ahlstrom, among other well-known teachers. He uses color rather freely in his paintings, looking intently at his subject matter to find even the most elusive trace of color. His style of painting is reminiscent of the Group of Ten, yet with a more contemporary flair. Mr. Cohen has been the recipient of many prizes and awards and has exhibited in various galleries in the area. His works are part of the permanent collection of the National Institutes of Health and the Kent Island Federation of Art. He has been commissioned by the Town of Poolesville to create drawings of historic landmarks for a special stamp commemorating Poolesville Day. His paintings can also be found in a multitude of private collections. His repertoire includes oils, watercolor and pen and ink. He specializes in landscapes and portraits. He belongs to The Washington Society of Landscape Painters (1992 - present), which is one of the oldest and most prestigious art organizations in the area. He is also a proud member of The Gaithersburg Fine Arts Association (1980 - present) and The Baltimore Watercolor Society. He was also a founding Board Member of the Gaithersburg City Council for the Arts from 1990 to the present. He resides in Gaithersburg and maintains a studio in the Kentlands at the Arts Barn where he also teaches classes. ART CLASSES Howard teaches classes in oil painting at the Arts Barn, 111 Kent Oaks Way, Gaithersburg MD, 20877 - at the Kentlands. They are held on Mon, Wed from 10:00 - 12:00 and Sat from 10:30 - 12:30. |
