Technical Questions

circle What is your medium now? (oils, acrylic, pastel, watercolor...) What medium have you always wanted to use, but haven't yet? What mediums have you used in the past? Why do you prefer your current medium?

My present medium is water color. I would like to use oils but just can't get around to start. In the past I have used pastel, pentel, pen & ink and gouache, mostly using them because of the type of work I did. I prefer watercolor because it's clean; has a transparent feel and easy to use.

circle Do you think the specific art materials you use are critical to the success of your work? If so, why?

I'm not sure about the art materials I use as being critical to the success of my work, I think how skillful you are is the success of the work.

circle On the monthly paintouts, how do you decide what to paint? What draws your eye to a particular scene?

On monthly paintouts I look for old buildings or objects that have character.

circle Do you do preliminary sketches before painting your subject? In a sketchbook? Or directly on the canvas or paper? Why?

I do preliminary sketches on paper before painting. I do this to see how my perspective is going to be and how it lays out.

circle What colors are on your palette?

Colors on my palette are: Cerulean Blue, Payne's Gray, Raw Sienna, Burnt Sienna, French Ultramarine, Olive Green, Sap Green, Van Dyke Brown, Sepia, Cadmium Yellow, Cadmium Red, & Permanent Green.

The "Business" of Art

circle Do you support yourself from your art? Or do you have another job? Or are you retired? How does this affect your time to paint?

I am retired so it does not affect my time to paint. I paint whenever I feel like it, and if I have a subject I'm painting, I'll paint it in a day or every day. Time does not matter.

circle Describe how you title your artwork. Does it help to market a painting if the title is a familiar location to your buyer? (Bonus: what has been your favorite title?)

I title my work for what it represents. I believe that a title representing an area familiar to the buyer is beneficial.

circle Do you have a personal website? Did you design it? Do you maintain it? If yes, how has that helped you market your art?

I do not have a personal website.

circle Can you recommend a record process for keeping track of art, buyers, galleries, show, competitions, meetings, etc. Please describe in detail.

I keep a journal and record all of my work, date, cost for marketing, sometimes the length of time to create.
