  PLEIN AIR PAINTOUTS

  Harper's Ferry WV
September 27, 2009
(Report by Mimi Hegler and Photos by Mimi Hegler and Hui Lai Chong)

Gray clouds and rain proved no match for three stalwart artists who painted at the Harpers Ferry Train Station. Although the trip there was marked by constant rain or drizzle, the weather greatly improved upon our arrival at 9 am. First we drove around the area to scope out perspective sites, but nothing we were interested in afforded nearby parking. Next to the Hilltop House was an area one could park and paint, but the view of the river was almost totally obscured by the height of the trees directly below us.

We settled on the train station lot which has a beautiful view of the many layers of the town and a unique view of the train tracks disappearing into a tunnel through a very imposing mountain. We set up and painted, hoping in vain the sun which occasionally appeared would make up its mind and stay. Hui Lai, a guest of Barbara Nuss, arrived and proceeded to set up and paint next to the train track. This was her second day of painting there and she seemed unaffected by the long and noisy trains that rumbled past her.

By lunchtime we were ready to depart due to a prior commitment, which left Hui Lai as the sole attendee to the lunch and critique at the visitor center.

Members present were Genevieve Roberts and Mimi Hegler. Our guest was Hui Lai Chong.
