  PLEIN AIR PAINTOUTS

  Old Angler's Inn
C&O Canal
Potomac River
Washington, DC

March 29, 2009
(Report and Photos by Barbara Nuss)

As has been the routine this year, the weather was iffy. Gray, gloomy, rainy, muddy, yucky, and foggy. The fog was interesting and promising and I hoped, as I drove to the site, that it would still be hovering over the Potomac. I was delighted to find a number of members and guests already engrossed in their paintings down by the river, enchanted by the fog. The fog was lovely, not too thick, but just enough to envelop the scene in a light gray mysterious velvet.

The artists were ensconced in boots, rain jackets, and other gear to protect them from the muck and drizzle. Several had umbrellas to keep the occasional rain drops off their paintings.

Most of the artists worked in oil, except Bruce Handford, our intrepid new watercolorist. He even had the nerve to ask me if there was a hair dryer available to dry his painting! The fog lasted until about 11:30 when the sun decided to take a stab at shining. Perfect timing - we all had our foggy paintings!

At noon we met where the bridge crosses the canal, ate our lunches and had our critique. The members present were John Bellinger, Bruce Handford, Mary Kokoski, Christine Lashley, Barbara Nuss, Sara Poly, and Richard Whiteley. Guests were Valerie Craig, Sarita Moffat, Mark Ingraham, Janice Rosenberg, and Craig Amaral.
